Rolling off shavings for purfling.

Sometimes shavings are not a waste product. These pear wood shavings will be used to make purfling, similar shavings are used to make "spiral bushings" for use in peg box repairs. To make a thick and uniform shaving can require considerable force and sometimes it takes two people to move the plane - one pushing, one pulling. 

The most extreme use of shavings that I have seen in violin making was in a cello by Giacinto Ruggieri where the beech wood linings of almost 2mm thickness had been rolled off with a plane. I always imagine Giacinto as a great bear of a man.
