| Reducing lumber to the delicate elements that make up a violin produces a lot of waste. Along with the smell of varnishes and resins, the crunch and rustle of wood chips underfoot is typical of a visit to a violin shop. A good deal of time is spent sweeping those chips away but occasionally they catch your eye and they can be quite stunning in their shape and variety. Curves are a defining element of violin design and its easy to see the curve of a corner or f-hole or the spiral of a scroll reflected in the wood chips and shavings produced while forming those curves. |
